London, October 2014 – I had just missed the London Fashion Week. Luckily, I caught the fashionista’s afternoon tea fittingly called “Prêt-à-Portea “at Berkeley Hotel!
In its ninth year, Prêt-à-Portea is a medley of edible delights inspired by the catwalk. For my tea, it was the last few days of serving up the Spring/Summer 2014 collection. The menu, reflecting the Spring/Summer and Fall/Winter fashion collections, changes two times annually.
I love the personalized namecard on the table – see the table has been reserved for “Mrs. King.” The bone china, customized for Prêt-à-Portea, is unique, colorful and fun.
The Berkeley sandwiches prepared by the kitchen team of Mr. Shaun Whatling were a sumptuous start. The servers asked graciously if I wanted any more sandwiches, but however tempting it may be, I resisted since I wanted to try the cakes and savory too.
The 3-tier cake tray arrived and it didn’t disappoint…the collection of cakes were lovely! The cakes had been created by Head Pastry Chef, Mr. Mourad Khiat based on inspirations from pattern on Victoria Beckham’s geometric graphic print dress, Miu Miu’s exotic leather tote bag…..
Although all the cakes and savory were delicious, I especially enjoyed the Oscar De La Renta pistachio sponge cake, which was moist and filled with the sweetness of pistachio!
The only other surprise to me was – scones are not served with this afternoon tea.
Each guest is provided with a detailed menu – with explanations of each item of food served. It certainly helped me to see the connection between the fashion and these edible treats!
A very nice ending to the Prêt-à-Portea was the takeway box of two beautiful delicacies.
Whether or not you are a fashionista, you will certainly enjoy this very delicate and thematic afternoon tea.

I went to this a few months back, and it was terrific. My wife’s into fashion and I’m very into afternoon tea, so it fit us perfectly.
