Sweet Treats at ROCAMBOLESC

Girona, February 2016 – Mr. King, Little K and I were strolling the streets of old town, Girona when we chanced upon ROCAMBOLESC, a gelateria created by the World’s Best Pastry Chef (2014), Jordi Roca. All three of us enjoyed lovely ice cream, inspired by Jordi Roca’s famous desserts at the world-renowned El Celler de Can Roca (#1 on World’s 50 Best  Restaurant list).

We were delighted to meet the beautiful wife of Jordi Roca – Alejandra Rivas, who manages ROCAMBOLESC.  She was preparing the ice-cream treats for us as she explained about the gelateria’s concept and latest creations like the hot ice-cream filled buns.  The good news was that there will be more ROCAMBOLESC openings – with one already in Madrid.

What is ROCAMBOLESC?

ROCAMBOLESC is intended to be a window to the cuisine of El Celler de Can Roca, to invite the public at large to come taste ‘what’s cooking’ in the restaurant; this is a place to experience the sweet sensations of El Celler.” (rocambolesc.com)

About the Décor?

“Inspired by the magical world of Willy Wonka, the fictional character that owns a chocolate factory in Roald Dahl’s children’s book and Tim Burton’s movie.”  And there was even an antique children’s tricycle (maybe Jordi’s when he was a toddler?) to keep our toddler boy, Little K busy while Mr. King and I savored these delicious treats!

What is special about ROCAMBOLESC Ice-Cream?

Aside from the freshly made ice-cream in an assortment of flavours, one can also choose an array of colourful toppings. “New products are created throughout the year: hot ice cream-filled buns, ice-cream muffins, etc. We also offer desserts with the ice creams and ingredients that we use at the restaurant.”

What The King Family ordered? And the Verdict?

The Vanilla – Vanilla ice cream with crunchy caramel bits, chocolate cake and chocolate sauce.  This is a chocolate-lover’s dream! It has just the right amount of chocolate and complimented with the texture of caramel bits.

The Lactic Dessert – Milk ice cream with Dulce de leche, guava confiture and cotton candy. One of our favourite desserts was The Cloud at Roca Moo. So this sundae certainly reminded us of The Cloud, which was sheep’s milk ice cream with guava confiture, topped with cotton candy.

Lastly, we took a little bit of “Roca” with us in the form of Roca dark chocolates. Sweet memories indeed!
