Salzburg, June 2015 – If there were an Austrian café institution, it would be the 300-years old Café Tomaselli. If it was good enough for Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, it is good enough for Mr. King and me.  Café Tomaselli was a favorite hangout for the prodigy composer.

Speaking of Wolfgang, it was another Wolfgang and his lovely wife who brought us to Café Tomselli. Being the oldest coffee house in Austria, it was founded in Goldgasse in 1700. The building in which the Café is presently situated at Alter Markt was purchased in 1764.

Step inside, and one feels that you have been sent back into the bygone era. The café is beautifully decorated with crystal chandeliers, old paintings, moldings and wooden in-laid walls. I suspected the furniture could be hundred years old too.

Be prepared, you may want to order more than a coffee! They have all sorts of cakes – Sachertorte, apple strudel, black forest, cheese cakes and crescent-shaped biscuits.

Though the cakes were extremely appealing, I was more tempted to try their Iced Chocolate and Iced Coffee (Euro 5.90 each).Yup, I ordered both.

Iced Chocolate is iced chocolate milk with vanilla ice cream topped with whipped cream.  Iced Coffee is iced coffee with vanilla ice cream topped with whipped cream.  Delicious could be an under-statement!  But if I could only choose one, it would be the Iced Chocolate.  Café Tomaselli is the perfect hangout on a hot summer afternoon.
